Children’s animation takes a turn toward subtle animation and user discovery with the latest genus of the E-book species.

“The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” created by ex-Pixar designer William Joyce in collaboration with Moonbot studios
combines the classic 2-D storybook with the same detailed and captivating 3-D animation of Pixar’s claim to fame in one iPad app.

Kids are encouraged to discover animation features for themselves without being bombarded by bright flashing buttons or
obnoxious sounds.

The E-book jumps right into the plot and associated technology without explanations or directions prompting the audience to learn and explore as they go.

The story can be enjoyed with or without the music, voice overs or the interactive animation.

As a clever prompt to upgrade to the latest version of the browser, Google Chrome introduces the first YouTube game, The “race across the internet.” Built entirely in Adobe Flash, the race takes the form of an interactive wooden ball path maze that, along its way, demonstrates how the latest Google Chrome experience super-cedes other browsers in speed.

As the user your task is to assist the ball along its path by answering questions that utilize the most popular services on the Web including Google Maps, Twitter, Google Translate, Last. fm and Google search.

At the end of the race an overview of your stats will determine whether the rate of brain behind the browser is as speedy as the browser itself.

The success of the advertisement is evident. After announcing the launch via twitter, loyal Google Chrome fans reportedly crashed the servers with excitement for the new game.

Designers are now welcome in the kitchen, and not just for plating. IKEA now offers an innovative cookbook “Homemade is Best” that makes the cut on our Holiday Gift list.

Inspired by high fashion and japanese minimalism this cookbook combines Cooking and Entertainment within 140 pages of baking ideas and instructions and design.

IKEA wisely reaches beyond kitchen appliances to the actual act of cooking using the same clever Swedish simplicity responsible for the needless to mention sweeping success of the brand.

The cook/coffee-table/design text is a response to the 90% of practically identical photographs taken in most baking books. This book presents recipes from a totally new angle.

Enjoy baking and flipping through the art of the ingredients with 30 classic swedish baking recipes everything from small biscuits to large cakes.

HOMEMADE IS BEST

You Aren’t What You Eat

IKEA has a solution to for the side effects of the above mentioned text “Homemade is Best.” After you have been inspired by 140 pages of baked goods there is an app to work it off, or for the planners, the other way around.

While contemporary culture transitions to a world leaving less and less of an agenda behind for analog crafts, Typeface can still be considered the most active form of Folk Art. TYPEFACE, the documentary takes a moment educate the public/pay homage to the design and impact of Typeface along with the minds and hands responsible for the development of the thing.

As integral as written correspondence is within our overall communication system its no doubt that a very delicate, deliberate science and art make up its foundation.

When it comes to Typeface we are as aware as we are unaware of what creates harmony within any written content. Spacing between characters, words, sentences and paragraphs all hold a heavy impact on the fluidity of the read. Any citizen of the given language that reads regularly would immediately notice a discomfort by the slightest shift in standard spacing.

The Trailer

Typeface is as uniquely researched and crafted as the spacing sensitivities. When dissecting each character, the linear relationship and exaggeration of each part relative to the rest of the word and/or sentence has an impact on the viewer, or, if more involved, the reader.

The iconic value of the nuances embedded within our written language, from concept to deployment, revealed by this documentary along with the machines that made the production possible.

As inherent concern with the exterior message naturally trumps the relevance of any reflection on design and development behind the characters that we use on a daily basis; still an emotional, mental and visual impact is made as often as they are used.

Regardless of our now and still growing digital world, this analog craft continues to leave its mark in full. TYPEFACE, the documentary provides insight into the science, art and design that has shaped and continues to shape our communication vessel, within the written environment.

Helvetica is probably the most recognized and most widely used typeface in the world. On one hand, this ubiquitous font can be impactful and strong, while on the other, it represents everything about minimalism. Take a walk around New York City, or really any other urban (or even suburban!) setting, and you’ll easily encounter some form of the Helvetica font at least two dozen times.

Believe it or not, there’s even a feature-length independent film about this iconic font. Helvetica, a documentary by filmmaker Gary Hustwit, examines typography, graphic design and global visual culture, and the proliferation of Helvetica specifically “as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.” While the content of this film may not be a revelation to many designers who know and love the font, this film will definitely surprise and entertain the rest of us who don’t work in the graphic design field. Check out the trailer here:

Whether we know the name or not, many of us have a personal favorite of the Helvetica family. Indigo’s a bit fan of Helvetica Neue:

One of the more interesting and effective uses of Helvetica we’ve seen lately is Original Music Shirt, a French company (and friend of Indigo!) that makes designer t-shirts. By aligning the Helvetica typeface with well-known song titles, classic lyrics or music-related statements, they’re able to trigger powerful emotional ties. After all, who doesn’t love to show off their musical tastes! Here are a few examples:

The story begins at Jacques Dessange, one of Paris’s most acclaimed
salons where stylist, David Cotteblanche and colorist, Reynald Ricard
met. Their talent and charm quickly catapulted them from stylists to
trainers who traveled the world imparting their styles and techniques.
Still, something was missing…. While working at Frederic Fekkai in NYC,
David and Reynald turned part of David’s apartment into a make-shift salon
where they tended to the tresses of friends who could not make it to the
salon during normal business hours. Soon the duo could not keep up with
the demands for late-night appointments.

RED MARKET was born to fill the void. After all, the city that never sleeps deserves
a salon that doesn’t either.
